When to use what
These tools answer different questions. Choosing between them depends on what you need to know, how much traffic you have, and how quickly you need the answer.
Use Hotjar when
You have steady traffic and want to see how real visitors behave on a live page. Session recordings, click maps, and scroll depth maps are genuinely useful for understanding behavioral patterns once you have enough sessions to draw conclusions.
Use VWO when
You have two (or more) concrete variants and enough traffic to run a statistically valid A/B test. VWO answers "which version converts better?" with statistical confidence. It does not tell you why one version outperforms the other.
Use UserTesting when

The traffic question
Hotjar's heatmaps require JavaScript installation and enough visitor sessions to produce a statistically reliable picture. Their documentation recommends at least 2,000 sessions.
